Christ Crucified
Alpine area of Europe, German or Austrian, mid-19th century.
Carved wood, gessoed and painted.
Wood Cross is 29.5 inches tall.
Condition is very good considering the age. Some areas have worn paint with the wood or gesso showing through.
A very naive or folk art carving. Very unusual presentation showing the Mother Mary at the foot of the cross. This depiction of Mary is called Our Lady of Sorrows.
A wonderful decoration that has adorned some mountain chalet or farm house for a long time.
