San Sebastian

Spanish, early 19th century.
32 inches tall, not including the crown.
Carved wood, gessoed, then polychormed.
Condition is excellent.
Virgin de Macarena.  Macarena is a neighborhood in Seville. The name is from Roman times and refers to the Romans who farmed those lands (Macarenus). The actual name of the Madonna is "Nuestra Señora Santíssima de la Esperanza de la Macarena", so she is an Our Lady of Hope (of the Macarena Basilica). There is a page on wikipedia about her: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanza_Macarena.  The original was created by Roldán who lived from 1656 to 1703.

Each community would dress their figures in a particular way/color slightly different from the others, and then smaller villages and communities tend to copy them.

The original was created by Roldán who lived from 1656 to 1703.
This red dressed Madonna is 32 inches tall not counting the crown.  The crown is not original to her as we put it on her to replace an original crown that has long been lost.

S966     $3,775 without the silver crown.
The sterling silver crown is $675

I bought this Madonna from a Marquis (French Count) who lives in southern Spain.  He has a hobby of collecting and selling antiques.  He said that he received this piece from the Figueroa family from Seville who are Spanish Counts in Spanish Royal Family.  The Virgin comes from a little pueblo outside Seville called Torre de la Reina.  During religious celebrations, she would be put on a different base and then used in the religious procession throughout the pueblo.
